Rabbeinu Aryeh Leib Breslau was born in Breslau in 1741. He learned for some time in Lissa (Leszno) and then in Berlin in the Bais Medrash of R’ Daniel Yaffe together with some of the greatest Torah luminaries of his generation. Rav Aryeh Leib served as the Rav in Emden for a short period of time and then became the Rav of Rotterdam. In this position he penned numerous responsa which eventually were compiled into the sefer Penei Aryeh. His responsa contain correspondence with many of the greatest Torah scholars of the day, such as Rav Pinchos Horowitz of Frankfurt (author of the Haflah), Rav Yeshaya Pick of Berlin, Rav Aryeh Leib Ginzburg of Metz (author of Shaagas Aryeh) and Rav Meir Pozna (author of Bais Meir). Rav Aryeh Leib Breslau passed away in 1809.
