Rav Yaakov Tzvi Mecklenburg (מחבר פירוש הכתב והקבלה ועוד)

Rabbeinu Yaakov Tzvi Mecklenburg was born in Lissa (Prussia/Poland) in 1785. He studied under Rav Akiva Eiger in Märkisch Friedland, Prussia. Rav Mecklenburg did not want to earn a living from his Torah knowledge, so he began working as a merchant. His business endeavors were unsuccessful, so in 1831 he was forced to accept a rabbinical post in Königsberg, Prussia. In this position, Rav Mecklenburg joined forces with Rav Meir Leibish Wisser (the Malbim) to combat the Reform Movement. To this end, he composed an original commentary on Chumash named Ha’kesav V’ha’kabalah, which is similar to the work of the Malbim in the sense that they both focus on the root sources of words. He also authored a commentary on prayer called Iyun Tefillah which is often published together with the commentary of Rav Yaakov Lorberbaum (author of Nesivos Hamishpat) named Derech HaChaim, who was the Chief Rabbi of Lissa during that time. Rav Yaakov Tzvi Mecklenburg served as the Rav of Königsberg for more than 30 years, until his passing in 1865.
